Abstract

This study explores the opportunities, challenges, and strategies associated with theory building through case-based research. Theory building is a fundamental aspect of academic research, offering structured frameworks for understanding, explaining, and predicting phenomena across various disciplines. Case studies serve as a vital tool in qualitative research for generating theories grounded in real-world contexts. However, the process of developing theories from case studies presents methodological challenges, including concerns about generalizability, researcher bias, and methodological rigor. By examining key methodologies such as Eisenhardt’s systematic approach, Yin’s replication logic, and Stake’s constructivist framework, this study identifies best practices for enhancing the credibility and applicability of case-based theories. The research highlights the unique advantages of case studies, including their ability to generate deep, context-specific insights that contribute to theory development. At the same time, it acknowledges challenges such as ensuring methodological robustness, minimizing biases, and addressing limitations in generalizability. To mitigate these challenges, the study proposes the use of triangulation, analytical generalization, and iterative data validation to enhance research credibility. Additionally, it emphasizes the role of cross-disciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement in increasing the practical utility of case-based theories. The findings provide valuable guidance for researchers seeking to bridge the gap between empirical data and theoretical abstraction, ultimately contributing to the advancement of qualitative research methodologies. By systematically addressing the complexities of theory building through case studies, this study offers a structured approach for generating impactful, contextually rich, and broadly applicable theoretical contributions.
